Smart City Holdings, LLC of Las Vegas fined 750,000 for WIFI blocking

Las Vegas based Smart City Holdings, LLC was fined 750,000 by the FCC for WIFI blocking. The company said they would not contest the fine and admitted to blocking the personal WIFI connections of attendee’s of conventions in Orlando. The company provides internet connections for exhibitors that need high speed internet to run their equipment on display. Smart City was charging 80 dollars per connection and those that wanted to use their own personal hot spots were being blocked from doing so. It is against the law to block the use of personal WIFI by any company.

Most convention centers, including the one in Orlando allows attendees to use free WIFI in limited areas but the exhibitors that need high speed internet to run their equipment must use the company that is the official provider for that convention, in many cases that company was Smart City. 80 dollars for PER DAY seems to be at least 4 times what would be expected but all services at convention centers are outrageous.
